The September Style Reset: How I’m Refreshing My Wardrobe for Fall

If your closet is currently giving you “I have nothing to wear” even though it’s technically full of clothes, consider this your September Style Reset. There’s something about September that always makes me want to reset my wardrobe. Not necessarily buy an entirely new one. Not even pack away every last summer piece. Just… reset.

The days are still warm, but the mornings feel different. I’m reaching for a light jacket before I leave the house, thinking about boots again, craving richer colors, and suddenly noticing all the pieces in my closet that I haven’t worn in months. September is that in-between season where your wardrobe has to work a little harder. And honestly? I love it. Because transitional dressing is where personal style gets interesting.

It’s less about following every new fall trend and more about looking at what you already own with fresh eyes — then adding a few intentional pieces that make everything else feel new again. So if your closet is currently giving you “I have nothing to wear” even though it’s technically full of clothes, consider this your September Style Reset.

1. Start with what you already own

Before you start shopping for fall, shop your closet. Pull out the pieces you loved wearing last fall. Bring your jackets, sweaters, boots, denim and transitional pieces back into rotation. Then look at your summer wardrobe differently. That linen button-down you’ve been wearing with shorts? Try it with jeans and loafers. Your favorite summer dress? Add a jacket, belt and boots. A simple tank? Layer it underneath a cardigan or blazer. The goal isn’t to completely replace your wardrobe every season. It’s to make your existing wardrobe work harder for you.

2. Start playing with color

One of my favorite ways to make a wardrobe feel fresh is simply to change the way you combine your colors. Fall doesn’t have to mean head-to-toe neutrals. This season, I’m especially drawn to unexpected combinations like:

Burgundy + powder blue

Olive green + plum

Butter yellow + gray

Maroon + soft pink

Blue + chocolate brown

These combinations feel rich and seasonal without feeling predictable. And if you’re someone who usually lives in black, beige and denim, you don’t have to suddenly become a rainbow dresser. Start small. Try a burgundy shoe. A powder-blue sweater. A colorful belt. A pop of yellow underneath a neutral blazer. Sometimes one unexpected color is enough to completely change an outfit.

3. Let one piece do the talking

I’m a big believer that an outfit doesn’t need to be complicated to be interesting. Sometimes you just need one piece with personality. Maybe it’s an animal-print skirt. A colorful striped sweater. A pair of burgundy boots. A statement belt. A printed blouse. A really good bag. The rest of the outfit can be simple.

In fact, I often think the best outfits have a little bit of restraint. Let one element be the reason someone looks twice. This is especially helpful if you’re trying to figure out your personal style. Instead of asking yourself, “What trend should I wear?” Ask: “What do I want this outfit to be remembered for?”

4. Bring prints into the mix

If you’ve been following along, you already know I’m very into prints for fall. Leopard, zebra, snake, croc, stripes, polka dots — I’m here for all of it. But animal print doesn’t have to mean an entire outfit. Think of it as a neutral. A leopard belt with denim. Zebra ballet flats with trousers. An animal-print bag with a simple sweater and jeans. A printed skirt with a solid knit. The trick is to let the print feel intentional rather than letting it take over the entire outfit. And if you’re nervous about prints, accessories are the easiest place to start.

5. Change your shoes before you change your outfit

This might be one of my favorite styling tricks. Take an outfit you’ve already worn and simply change the shoes. Jeans + sweater + sneakers becomes something completely different with ballet flats. The same jeans + blouse can feel more polished with a loafer. A summer dress can suddenly feel like fall with boots.

Your wardrobe doesn’t always need more clothes. Sometimes it needs different finishing pieces. Shoes, bags, belts and jewelry can completely change the personality of something you’ve worn a dozen times.

6. Add a little structure

Fall is one of my favorite seasons for layering because you can start adding structure back into your outfits. Blazers. Leather jackets. Trench coats. Structured cardigans. Belts. Long coats. These pieces can take something simple and make it feel styled.

One of my favorite formulas for this time of year is: Simple base + structured layer + statement accessory.

Think jeans and a tee with a blazer and bold belt. Or a simple dress with a jacket, boots and oversized earrings. Or trousers and a knit with a great bag. You don’t need six layers. You just need the right ones.

7. Don’t underestimate the accessory

Accessories are probably the easiest way to make your wardrobe feel different without actually buying a whole new wardrobe. A belt can change the proportions of an outfit. A bag can add color. Jewelry can make something feel more elevated. A scarf can completely change a simple sweater. Sunglasses can make a basic outfit feel intentional.

And lately, I’m especially loving the idea of statement accessories — bangles, layered necklaces, colorful belts, oversized earrings and bags that add a little personality. They’re the finishing touch that makes an outfit feel like you.

My September Shopping Rule

If you do want to shop for fall, I have one rule: Don’t buy something just because it’s trending. Before purchasing, ask yourself: Can I wear this at least three different ways?

If the answer is yes, that’s a good sign. If you can immediately picture it with your favorite jeans, your trousers, a skirt or something already sitting in your closet, even better. Because the best wardrobe isn’t necessarily the one with the most clothes. It’s the one where everything has potential. That’s what intentional shopping is about. You’re not shopping for one outfit. You’re shopping for the possibility of multiple outfits.

Your September Style Homework

This weekend, give yourself 30 minutes. Open your closet and pull out:

  • 3 pieces you haven’t worn in a while

  • 2 fall pieces you’re excited to wear again

  • 1 piece with a bold print or color

  • 1 pair of shoes you usually overlook

  • 1 accessory that deserves another chance

Then start mixing. Try something you normally wouldn’t. Put burgundy with blue. Try leopard with denim. Pair a summer piece with boots. Add a belt. Change the shoes. Layer something differently. You might be surprised by how many new outfits are already hiding in your closet. And if you still find yourself staring at a full wardrobe thinking I have nothing to wear… Maybe you don’t need more clothes. Maybe you just need a fresh perspective. That’s always where I’d start.

Happy September,
