DIY Denim: How I Turned $14 Jeans Into Statement Pieces With Fringe & Feathers

Pink tassels, brown suede fringe, mint-green ostrich feathers, and a little fabric glue. Here's how I'm giving old and affordable denim a fun, fashion-forward makeover!

If there's one thing I love, it's finding ways to make fashion feel fun, personal, and a little unexpected. And lately, I've been on a DIY denim kick! I've been seeing so many fun ways to customize denim, and I decided it was time to stop saving the inspiration photos and actually try it myself. My mission? Take affordable jeans and transform them into statement pieces with colorful fringe, suede tassels, and feathers. The best part is that you absolutely do not need to be a DIY expert to do this. I promise! I used E6000 fabric glue for all four pairs, and the process was sooo much easier than I expected.

I started with jeans I found on mega sale at Marshalls, a pair from Old Navy, an affordable Zara find, and even a pair of straight-leg jeans I already owned from H&M. With a few inexpensive embellishments, each pair became something completely different.

And now I have four unique pairs of jeans that feel like they belong in a boutique — without the boutique price tag.

Let's get into the details!

The Inspiration: Making Fashion a Little More Fun

I've always loved the idea of taking a classic wardrobe staple and giving it a twist. Denim is the perfect place to start because it's versatile, easy to style, and something most of us already have plenty of in our closets. Instead of buying four new pairs of statement jeans, I wanted to experiment with pieces I could customize myself. My inspiration was simple: What if I took basic jeans and added a little movement, texture, and personality to the sides or hems? Think colorful tassels, soft suede fringe, playful feathers, and unexpected details that make an otherwise simple outfit feel special. I ended up creating four different pairs, each with its own personality. And honestly, I'm already brainstorming what to DIY next!

DIY #1: Pink Fringe on My Gap High Rise Stride Wide-Leg Jeans

For my first project, I found the Gap High Rise Stride Wide-Leg Jeans on mega sale at Marshalls. I love a good wide-leg jean, and the price made these the perfect pair to experiment with. I decided to add pink tassel fringe down both pant legs, which I purchased on Amazon. I love how the pink adds a playful pop of color to the denim. It takes a classic wide-leg silhouette and makes it feel much more fashion-forward and unexpected. I can already picture these styled with a simple white tee, a fitted sweater, or even a feminine blouse and heels. The jeans themselves become the statement, so the rest of the outfit can be relatively simple.

What I used:

  • Gap High Rise Stride Wide-Leg Jeans from Marshalls

  • Pink tassel fringe from Amazon

  • E6000 fabric glue

The beauty of this project is that you can choose any color fringe to match your personal style. Pink is my choice for a fun, feminine look, but red, burgundy, chocolate brown, or even a metallic trim could be so cute!

DIY #2: Brown Suede Fringe on My Old Navy Wide-Leg Jeans

This pair might be the most wearable of the bunch! I started with the Extra High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans from Old Navy and added brown suede fringe down both pant legs, which I found at Hobby Lobby. I love the combination of denim and suede. It feels very fall-inspired, adds beautiful texture, and works perfectly with the rich brown tones I'm gravitating toward this season. Of all four DIYs, these are the only ones I've worn out so far — and I already know I'll get plenty of use out of them! I've been imagining them with chocolate brown boots, a cream sweater, a suede jacket, or a feminine blouse. They would also look so cute with a simple fitted top and a structured handbag. The brown fringe makes them feel special without being too over-the-top, which is exactly what I wanted.

What I used:

  • Old Navy Extra High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans

  • Brown suede fringe from Hobby Lobby

  • E6000 fabric glue

If you're new to DIY denim, this is a great place to start. The brown trim adds interest while still feeling relatively neutral and easy to style.

DIY #3: Mint-Green Ostrich Feathers on My Zara Jeans

Okay, these are for my fashion girls! I found a pair of cropped straight-leg Zara jeans at Marshalls for just $14. Yes, $14! I knew I wanted to do something a little more unexpected with them, so I added mint-green ostrich feathers to the bottom of each pant leg, which I purchased on Amazon. This pair is definitely the most playful of the four, and I cannot wait to wear them! The soft, feathery texture against the structured denim creates such a fun contrast. And the mint green? It's unexpected, colorful, and exactly the kind of detail that makes an outfit feel unique. I'm imagining these with a simple black top, a fitted white blouse, or a sweater in a complementary color. I'd probably keep the rest of the outfit fairly streamlined and let the feathered hems do all the talking. These are also a reminder that you don't have to spend a fortune to experiment with statement fashion. A $14 pair of jeans can become something completely different with a little creativity.

What I used:

  • Cropped straight-leg Zara jeans from Marshalls

  • Mint-green ostrich feathers from Amazon

  • E6000 fabric glue

These are the jeans I'm saving for the perfect fun occasion. A fashion event, girls' night out, or an outfit shoot would be the ideal excuse to pull them out!

DIY #4: White Tassel Fringe on My H&M Straight-Leg Jeans

For my fourth and final pair, I decided to use jeans I already owned! I took a pair of straight-leg jeans from H&M and added white tassel fringe to the bottom of both pant legs. I love that this pair feels a little more subtle than the pink fringe or mint feathers while still having a fun, statement-making detail. The white trim creates contrast against the denim and gives the jeans a fresh, playful look. I could see these working with a colorful sweater, a simple button-down, or even a feminine blouse and pointed-toe flats. This was also a great reminder that DIY fashion doesn't have to start with shopping. Sometimes the best project is the one that gives something you already own a second life.

What I used:

  • Straight-leg jeans I already owned from H&M

  • White tassel fringe

  • E6000 fabric glue

This pair is proof that you can refresh a basic item in your closet without buying a new pair of jeans at all.

The Secret to All Four Projects: E6000 Fabric Glue

Now for the part that made these projects so easy: E6000 fabric glue! I used it for all four pairs, and I was pleasantly surprised by how simple the process was. I didn't sew anything, use a sewing machine, or need any advanced crafting skills.

Here's the basic process I followed:

  1. Plan your placement. Lay the jeans flat and arrange your fringe or feathers along the area where you want them to sit. Make sure the embellishment runs evenly down both legs or along both hems.

  2. Measure before gluing. Check the length and placement on both sides before committing. You want the details to look intentional and balanced.

  3. Apply the fabric glue carefully. Follow the adhesive's product instructions, working in small sections and using only the amount needed to secure the trim.

  4. Press the embellishment into place. Smooth the trim gently and make sure it sits the way you want it to.

  5. Let everything cure completely. Follow the product label for curing time, ventilation, and handling. Don't wear or wash the jeans until the adhesive has fully cured.

One important note: because these are embellished garments, I'd test the glue on a small, inconspicuous area first and check that the trim and adhesive are compatible with your denim. Feathers and tassels can be more delicate than regular fabric, so gentle care is key. I also wouldn't assume the embellishments will withstand repeated washing just because the glue has cured. Check the product directions, and spot-clean or hand-clean carefully as appropriate. The biggest takeaway? You don't have to be an expert to try something creative with your clothes. Start simple, take your time, and have fun with it!

How I'm Planning to Style My DIY Jeans

The fun part about creating statement denim is figuring out how to wear it without making the outfit feel too busy. My approach is to let the jeans be the focal point and build the rest of the look around them.

Here are a few outfit formulas I can't wait to try:

The pink fringe jeans

Pink tassel fringe + fitted white tee + zebra hair belt + pointed-toe heels + structured handbag.

The brown suede fringe jeans

Brown suede fringe + cream sweater + brown knee-high boots + coordinating handbag.

The mint feather jeans

Mint-green feathers + lace black top + black heels + statement earrings.

The white tassel jeans

White tassel fringe + white tee + cropped blazer + fun pumps + everyday tote.

I love how each pair creates a completely different mood, even though all four started with relatively simple denim. And that's what I love most about personal style: you can take the same wardrobe staples and make them feel completely your own.

Have I Worn Them All Yet? Not Quite!

So far, I've only worn the brown suede fringe jeans out, but I'm waiting for the perfect fun opportunity to pull out the pink tassels, mint-green feathers, and white fringe. I don't want to save them forever, though! Part of the fun of making something unique is actually wearing it, experimenting with outfits, and seeing how other people respond. The brown pair has already shown me how much personality a little trim can add to denim, and I'm excited to bring the others into my outfit rotation. I also have so many more DIY ideas running through my head.

Next up? Adding fringe and feathers to the cuffs of blouses! I think a simple blouse with a little movement at the sleeves could be such a fun way to elevate an everyday outfit. I'm also brainstorming more ways to customize pieces I already own and turn affordable basics into statement-making finds. Stay tuned, because I have a feeling this is just the beginning of my DIY fashion era!

Final Thoughts: Your Sign to Get Creative With Your Closet

This project reminded me that fashion doesn't always have to mean shopping for something new. Sometimes it's about seeing the potential in what you already own and having a little fun with it. I found jeans on sale at Marshalls, used a pair from Old Navy, turned a $14 Zara find into a statement piece, and gave my existing H&M jeans a fresh look. With a few embellishments from Amazon and Hobby Lobby and some fabric glue, I created four pairs that feel completely different from anything I'd typically find on a store rack.

Will every DIY turn out perfectly? Maybe not! But that's part of the fun.

If you've been wanting to experiment with your wardrobe, take this as your sign to try something simple. Add a little fringe, customize a hem, embellish a blouse, or give an old favorite a new look. You might just create your new favorite piece. And if you try this DIY, I'd love to see what you come up with!
