The Fall Color & Print Edit
The unexpected color combinations and prints I'm loving for the season ahead.
Fall fashion doesn't have to mean putting on a brown sweater and black boots and calling it a day. Don't get me wrong—I love a classic fall wardrobe. But this season, I'm especially drawn to unexpected color combinations, playful prints, and patterns that make an outfit feel a little more interesting. We're seeing rich, moody shades mixed with unexpected pastels, classic neutrals paired with color, and prints that can completely transform even the simplest outfit.
And the best part? You don't have to completely reinvent your wardrobe to participate. Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected color combination, one printed accessory, or one statement piece to make the clothes you already own feel fresh again. So today, I'm breaking down some of my favorite fall color combinations and the prints and patterns I'm reaching for this season—and, more importantly, how I'd actually style them.
Burgundy + Powder Blue
This combination is at the top of my fall mood board. Burgundy immediately feels rich and autumnal, while powder blue brings in something softer and unexpected. The contrast is what makes it work.
How I'd style it:
Powder blue button-down + burgundy trousers + brown belt + loafers
Or keep it more subtle: Denim + powder blue sweater + burgundy handbag or shoes
You don't have to wear equal amounts of both colors. Let one be the main character and use the other as an accent.
My stylist tip:
If you're nervous about mixing unexpected colors, start with accessories. A burgundy bag with a powder blue blouse is enough to create the combination without feeling overwhelming.
Butter Yellow + Gray
Who says fall colors have to be dark? Butter yellow has been such a fun color to incorporate into wardrobes, and I love seeing it paired with cooler shades like gray. The result feels soft, modern, and incredibly chic.
How I'd style it:
Butter yellow sweater + gray trousers + black loafers
Or: Gray skirt + butter yellow blouse + structured handbag
You can also use gray as your neutral base and bring in yellow through your top, handbag, or shoes.
My stylist tip:
This is a great combination if you love neutrals but want to experiment with color. The gray keeps the yellow feeling sophisticated rather than overly summery.
Olive Green + Plum
This is one of those combinations that feels a little unexpected—but once you see it together, it makes perfect sense.
Olive brings the earthy, muted element while plum adds depth and richness. It's sophisticated without feeling predictable.
How I'd style it:
Olive trousers + plum sweater + brown leather accessories
Or try: Plum blouse + denim + olive jacket
My stylist tip:
This combination looks especially beautiful when you mix textures. Think:
Knit + suede.
Leather + cotton.
Wool + denim.
The texture adds another layer of interest without needing additional colors.
Maroon + Light Pink
This is for anyone who likes their fall wardrobe with a little femininity. Maroon is deep, rich, and moody, while light pink keeps it soft. Together, they create a combination that feels romantic but still polished.
How I'd style it:
Light pink blouse + maroon trousers + brown loafers
Or: Maroon sweater + denim + light pink handbag or ballet flats
My stylist tip:
Don't be afraid to wear pink in the fall. The trick is simply to ground it with a deeper shade. A soft pink blouse feels completely different when paired with maroon trousers than it does with white jeans.
Blue + Brown
This is one of my favorite everyday combinations because it's so easy to wear. Blue and brown are both incredibly versatile, and together they create that effortless “she just knows how to dress” feeling.
How I'd style it:
Blue button-down + brown trousers + brown belt + loafers
Or: Denim + chocolate brown sweater + brown handbag
Or even: Powder blue + chocolate brown + cream
My stylist tip:
This is one color combination I'd encourage everyone to try. You probably already own the pieces. You just have to put them together.
Now Lets Talk Prints
Color isn't the only way to make a fall wardrobe more interesting. This season, I'm also loving the return of bold, classic prints and patterns. And no—you don't need to wear head-to-toe print to participate. In fact, I usually prefer the opposite. Let one print make the statement and keep the rest of the outfit simple.
Cheetah Print
Cheetah is one of those prints that keeps coming back because it really does act almost like a neutral. A cheetah shoe, belt, handbag, or jacket can add personality to an otherwise simple outfit.
Try:
Straight-leg denim + white button-down + cheetah belt + loafers
Or: Black trousers + simple knit + cheetah handbag
Stylist tip:
Treat cheetah like a neutral. Pair it with black, brown, denim, cream, burgundy, or even one of this season's unexpected colors.
Zebra Print
If cheetah feels a little too familiar, zebra is the more fashion-forward alternative. Because it's typically black and white, it can actually be surprisingly easy to style.
Try:
Zebra skirt + simple black sweater + boots
Or: Denim + white tee + zebra flats
Or keep it very subtle with a zebra handbag or belt.
Stylist tip:
Because zebra is already visually strong, keep the rest of your outfit simple. Let the print be the statement.
Snake Skin
Snake print adds texture and visual interest without necessarily feeling as bold as a traditional animal print. I especially love it in accessories.
Try:
Denim + cream sweater + snake-print flats
Or: Black trousers + white button-down + snake-print handbag
Stylist tip:
Think of snake print as an accessory rather than an entire outfit. One piece is usually enough.
Plaid
Could fall fashion exist without plaid? Probably not. But this season, I'm less interested in predictable plaid shirts and more interested in unexpected ways to incorporate the pattern. Think plaid trousers, skirts, blazers, coats, scarves, and even accessories.
Try:
Plaid trousers + fitted knit + loafers
Or: Denim + simple tee + plaid blazer
Stylist tip:
If you're wearing a statement plaid, pull one of the colors from the pattern into the rest of your outfit. It makes the entire look feel intentional.
Stripes
Stripes are another classic that never really leaves—and I'm completely okay with that. They're one of the easiest patterns to wear because they can function almost like a neutral.
Try:
Striped button-down + denim + brown belt + loafers
Or: Striped sweater + tailored trousers + flats
Stylist tip:
Don't be afraid to mix stripes with other prints. A striped top with a subtle animal-print shoe can actually look incredibly chic when the colors are cohesive.
How to Wear Prints Without Feeling Overwelmed
If prints and patterns aren't normally your thing, don't feel like you have to jump into a printed dress or statement coat. Start small.
Try a printed accessory.
A belt.
A handbag.
A shoe.
A scarf.
Then build from there. And remember one of my favorite styling rules:
One statement is enough.
If you're wearing a bold printed skirt, keep your top simple. If you're wearing a statement animal-print bag, let the rest of your outfit be understated. If you're mixing two colors that make a statement, keep the silhouette clean. You don't need every element of an outfit to compete for attention.
The Sweet Caroline Way to Try a Trend
Before you buy something simply because you love how it looks on someone else, ask yourself:
Can I see myself actually wearing this?
Does it work with what I already own?
Can I style it at least three ways?
Does it feel like my personal style?
If the answer is yes, that's when I think a trend becomes worth trying. Because personal style isn't about wearing everything that's popular. It's about taking what's inspiring you and making it your own.
Your Fall Color + Print Cheat Cheat
If you're looking for somewhere to start, save these combinations:
Burgundy + powder blue
Butter yellow + gray
Olive green + plum
Maroon + light pink
Blue + brown
And for prints:
Cheetah
Zebra
Snake skin
Plaid
Stripes
You don't need all of them. Choose one color combination and one print that feels the most like you. That's enough to give your fall wardrobe a fresh perspective.
A Final Style Note
The best part about a new season isn't buying an entirely new wardrobe. It's seeing your wardrobe differently. Maybe it's pairing colors you wouldn't normally put together. Maybe it's wearing an animal print you've always considered “too much.” Maybe it's styling your favorite summer pieces with deeper fall colors. Maybe it's simply adding a printed shoe to an outfit you've worn a hundred times.
Fashion should be fun. Your wardrobe should give you room to experiment, play, and try something new without losing sight of your personal style. So this fall, don't be afraid to mix it up. Try the unexpected color combination. Wear the print. Add the statement accessory. And most importantly, wear it like you.
Yours truly,
Caroline Vonier
