The 2026 Halloween Costume Edit 🎃

The movies, icons, couples & fashion moments that are about to become Halloween costumes. Halloween is officially getting a fashion girl makeover. Every year there are those costumes that make you think, of course. And then there are the ones that are so specific, so clever, or so perfectly timed that everyone at the party immediately gets the reference. And 2026 has given us a LOT to work with.

From movies and TV shows to iconic women, nostalgic characters, celebrity moments and some very fashionable fictional couples, this year's best costumes don't necessarily require a trip to the costume aisle. In fact, some of my favorites can be created almost entirely from pieces you already own. So whether you're looking for something cute, glamorous, funny, nostalgic, recognizable, or a little bit extra, here is my Sweet Caroline Collection 2026 Halloween costume edit.

THE GIRL COSTUMES

1. Hilary Duff

We're bringing back the ultimate early-2000s girl. And honestly, there are so many ways to do Hilary Duff. Go as Lizzie McGuire with a colorful Y2K outfit, mini skirt, crop top, platform shoes and butterfly clips. Or recreate one of Hilary's iconic red-carpet looks with a tiny dress, strappy heels, glossy makeup and a little shoulder bag. Want to make it even more specific? Go as Lizzie McGuire's animated alter ego with a colorful outfit and a tiny cartoon version of yourself attached to your shoulder. It's nostalgic, instantly recognizable and very fun.

Costume mood: Y2K, colorful, playful, nostalgic.

2. Dolly Parton

This year's Halloween is also the perfect time to celebrate one of the biggest icons in music and American pop culture. Dolly Parton passed away in August 2026 at age 80, and early Halloween coverage has already noted increased interest in Dolly-inspired costumes. And luckily, Dolly's style is basically MADE for Halloween. You don't even need an exact Dolly outfit. The goal is simply: More sparkle. More hair. More rhinestones. Bonus points if you carry a tiny guitar.

Think:

  • Rhinestones

  • Big blonde hair

  • White boots

  • Sequins

  • Fringe

  • Flared jeans

  • Statement jewelry

  • Corset-style tops

  • Big sunglasses

3. Cruella de Vil

Some costumes are timeless because the fashion is simply too good. Cruella is one of them. Black and white hair. Dramatic coat. Red lipstick. Gloves. Heels. Statement jewelry. And if you want to make it feel more editorial instead of costume-store Cruella, wear a black-and-white printed dress or skirt with a dramatic faux-fur coat. Then bring your own Dalmatian. Which brings us to…

🐾 Cruella + a Dalmatian

This is such a cute option for a best friend, boyfriend, girlfriend or even a dog-parent costume. One person goes full Cruella. The other wears a white outfit covered in black spots — or simply goes as a Dalmatian. Simple. Recognizable. Fashionable.

4. Princess Mia from The Princess Diaries

Another nostalgic favorite that will never stop being cute. You can go two directions:

Pre-princess Mia: Messy hair, glasses, school uniform, backpack and awkward teenage energy.

Princess Mia: Elegant dress, tiara, gloves, pearls and major royal energy.

And if you want to make it funny, carry a notebook labeled: “Genovia.”

5. The 2026 Fashion Girl

Not every costume has to be a specific person. For the girl who would rather dress up as herself — but dramatically, go as a 2026 fashion girl. Basically: Fashion Week street style meets “I just happen to look this good.” Animal-print accessories, expressive styling, flare-leg denim and nostalgic pieces are all appearing in current celebrity and fall fashion coverage. Your costume can literally be titled: “Off-Duty Fashion Editor.”

Think:

  • Animal-print bag

  • Flare-leg jeans

  • Oversized sunglasses

  • Statement jewelry

  • Slouchy bag

  • Graphic tee

  • Dramatic coat

  • Ballet flats

  • Big hair

6. The 13 Going on 30 Jenna

Think early-2000s magazine editor meets NYC fashion girl:

  • Colorful mini dress or skirt

  • Statement necklace

  • Strappy heels

  • Fun handbag

  • Voluminous hair

  • Glossy makeup

Or go for the “30, flirty & thriving” look with a more glamorous party dress and a little extra sparkle. And obviously, the finishing touch is a tiny sign, sash or magazine prop that says: 30, flirty & thriving. This one is especially fun because you get to actually dress like Jenna Rink rather than wearing a traditional costume.

THE COUPLES COSTUME EDIT

7. Spider-Man + His Girlfriend

This is one of the easiest couples costumes to recognize immediately. One person is Spider-Man. The other gets to make the costume fashion girl approved. You could also recreate a specific Spider-Man movie couple if you want to make the reference more exact. Spider-Man is especially timely this year thanks to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has made the character an obvious 2026 pop-culture costume choice.

Think:

Spider-Man: classic suit.

Girlfriend: red, blue or black outfit, mini skirt or jeans, sneakers or boots, cute bag and maybe a camera.

8. Benedict & Sophie from Bridgerton

If you love a costume that lets you dress UP, this is the one. Season 4 of Bridgerton centers on Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek, including their now-iconic masquerade-ball storyline. Netflix's costume team created hundreds of elaborate garments and accessories for the season.

For Sophie: Silver gown + mask + pearls + gloves + romantic hair.

For Benedict: Dark teal or blue Regency-inspired suit + open collar + tousled hair.

The best part? You can make this as elaborate or as simple as you want. And if you're going to a Halloween party where everyone else is wearing basic costumes, arriving as a Regency couple is going to feel VERY extra. In the best way.

9. Poppy & Alex from People We Meet on Vacation

For the couple who wants something cute, recognizable and not overly costumey.

Poppy:

  • Colorful outfit

  • Travel bag

  • Sunglasses

  • Sneakers

  • Camera

  • Vacation-inspired accessories

Alex:

  • Casual button-down

  • Jeans or shorts

  • Backpack

  • Sneakers

  • Book

And then add a tiny suitcase or passport. The Netflix adaptation of Emily Henry's People We Meet on Vacation premiered in January 2026 and follows Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen on their years-long travel romance. Bonus points if you spend the entire night acting like you're on a very chaotic vacation together.

10. The Couple from Obsession

For something a little darker… Go as the couple from 2026's Obsession. This is perfect if you want your Halloween costume to feel more fashionable thriller than traditional Halloween. Keep the styling sophisticated and let the reference do the work. The movie has already been singled out in 2026 Halloween coverage as a costume reference, particularly for recreating its memorable looks.

Think:

Her: sleek, dark, slightly mysterious outfit, dramatic makeup and understated accessories.

Him: dark trousers, button-down, jacket and an effortlessly polished look.

11. Princess Mia & Her Prince (or bodyguard)

If you're going as a couple and want something romantic and classic, turn The Princess Diaries into a couples costume. You can even make a tiny sign: “Genovia Royal Ball.”

She: Princess Mia — tiara, elegant dress, pearls.

He: The Prince — suit, dress shoes and a royal sash.

OR: The Bodyguard - all black

12. Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce

A couples costume that practically styles itself.

For Taylor, choose one of her recognizable football-game looks:

  • Chiefs-inspired colors

  • Mini skirt or shorts

  • Boots

  • Red lipstick

  • Gold jewelry

  • Sunglasses

For Travis:

  • Football jersey

  • Sneakers

  • Athletic socks

  • Mustache optional

And obviously… Friendship bracelets.

13. The Fairly OddParents: Timmy Turner & Trixie Tang

For a couple who wants something cute, nostalgic and a little unexpected, this one is SO fun. Or, if you want to make it more obvious, one person can go as Timmy and the other can dress as Cosmo & Wanda with a third friend. The nostalgia factor is doing all the work here.

Timmy: Blue hat, pink shirt, jeans and sneakers.

Trixie: Pink or purple outfit, cute accessories and very early-2000s popular-girl energy.

14. Sharpay & Ryan Evans from High School Musical

This is for the couple who is fully prepared to be dramatic all night long. The key is to make it feel like you just walked straight out of East High. Bonus points if you spend the night dramatically posing together like you're about to perform “Bop to the Top.”

Sharpay: Pink. Sparkles. Fur. Heels. Big sunglasses. A tiny dog optional.

Ryan: Pink or pastel polo, sweater vest, trousers, loafers and, most importantly, a hat.

GIRLS' GROUP COSTUMES

15. Miranda Priestly & Andy Sachs

The ultimate fashion-girl Halloween costume. And if you're going with another couple or friend group, add Emily and Nigel. Because The Devil Wears Prada is basically Halloween for fashion girls.

Miranda: Oversized sunglasses. Immaculate tailoring. Statement coat. Heels. Serious expression.

Andy: Black outfit. Designer-inspired accessories. Boots. Oversized bag.

16. Glinda & Elphaba

The perfect best-friend or couple costume. You don't even need the official costumes. Just recreate the color palettes and silhouettes. Pink + green makes the whole reference instantly recognizable.

Glinda: pink, sparkly, feminine, pearls, tiara.

Elphaba: emerald green, black, dramatic makeup, witch hat.

17. The Off Campus Girls

If you and your girlfriends want a costume that feels very current, go as the girls from Off Campus.

Think:

  • Varsity jackets

  • Mini skirts

  • Hockey-inspired pieces

  • Sweatshirts

  • Knee-high socks

  • Sneakers

  • Cute collegiate accessories

Everyone can pick her own version of the Briar U aesthetic. The best part is that it doesn't require everyone to wear an identical costume.

18. The Princess Diaries Girls

Go as a whole group of Genovia girls. One person can be Princess Mia. Another can be Lilly. Another can be Clarisse. Another can be a royal guard. Another can be Michael. And yes, someone absolutely needs to carry a tiny crown.

19. The Fashion Editors

This one is for the girls who don't want a literal character costume. Everyone dresses as a different version of a fashion editor:

The Vogue Editor: Black, sleek, polished.

The Street Style Editor: Statement coat, sunglasses, bold accessories.

The Accessories Editor: Massive jewelry and the best handbag.

The Beauty Editor: Perfect hair and makeup.

The Fashion Week Editor: The most dramatic outfit possible.

Everyone gets a fake fashion-week schedule and a coffee.

20. The 2000s It Girls

If your group wants something nostalgic, make the entire group a collection of early-2000s icons.

Think: Paris Hilton. Lindsay Lohan. Nicole Richie. Hilary Duff. Britney Spears.

Low-rise denim, tiny tops, platform shoes, little bags, oversized sunglasses and lots of gloss. The best part? Everyone gets to choose her own icon.

MORE COSTUME IDEAS I'M LOVING FOR 2026

If none of those are quite your thing, here are a few more:

Mean Girls Cast

Lots of pink, makeup, and sas.

Audrey Hepburn

Little black dress, pearls, gloves, sunglasses and a tiny tiara.

Mob Wife

Faux fur, leopard print, gold jewelry, red lips and oversized sunglasses.

Barbie (& Ken)

Pink everything, heels, a tiny handbag and an aggressively perfect blowout.

Wednesday Addams

Black dress, braids, tights and a deadpan expression.

Carrie Bradshaw

Tutu, heels, statement bag and one completely unnecessary but fabulous accessory.

Cher

Sequins, dramatic hair, platform boots and as much sparkle as humanly possible.

Disco Queen

Sequins, fringe, metallics and platform shoes.

White Chicks Duo

Blonde wigs, and the rest is yours!

Freaky Friday

Matching rocky girl band outfits, or try the mother daughter duo looks.

The Sweet Caroline Costume Rule

My biggest Halloween styling tip? Don't feel like your costume has to come from a costume store. Some of the best costumes start with clothes you already own. A black dress can become Audrey Hepburn, Cruella, Wednesday Addams, a fashion editor or a movie character. A blazer can become Miranda Priestly. A tiara can become Princess Mia. A silver dress can become Sophie from Bridgerton. A pair of flare jeans and a tiny top can become a Y2K icon.

The trick is in the styling. Add the right shoes. The right accessories. The right hair. The right makeup. Suddenly, an outfit becomes a character. And honestly, that's what makes a costume feel the most fun. This Halloween, don't just dress up. Style the costume. 🎃
