The 10 Fall Pieces I’m Actually Wearing This October
The pieces I’m reaching for on repeat—and how I’m styling them all season long. There’s something about October fashion that I just love. We’re officially past the “is it actually fall yet?” phase, but we’re not quite ready to live in chunky sweaters and coats every single day. It’s that perfect in-between season where getting dressed becomes a little more creative—and, in my opinion, a lot more fun.
As a stylist, I’m always talking about the importance of building a wardrobe that works together rather than constantly buying something new every time the season changes. So instead of giving you another giant list of everything you could possibly buy for fall, I wanted to share 10 pieces I’m actually wearing and reaching for this October. These are the pieces that make getting dressed easier, give my existing wardrobe a little refresh, and can be styled in so many different ways. And yes—everything is shoppable, because if I’m going to tell you what I’m loving, I want you to be able to find it, too.
1. Wide-Leg Jeans
If there’s one denim silhouette I’m reaching for constantly this fall, it’s wide-leg jeans.
I love the way they instantly make an outfit feel more current without requiring much effort. Pair them with a fitted tee and flats for an easy everyday look, add a cardigan and belt for something a little more polished, or style them with a statement blouse and heels for dinner. My favorite styling trick? Balance the volume. When your jeans are wide and relaxed, try a more fitted or tucked-in top to create some shape. And don't be afraid to play with proportions—an oversized jacket can absolutely work with wide-leg denim, too. Just add a great shoe and intentional accessories to keep the look polished.

2. Baseball Hats
Consider this your permission to wear a baseball hat with almost anything. A good baseball hat has officially moved beyond the “bad hair day” category in my wardrobe. I love using one to make a polished outfit feel a little more relaxed—or to add a sporty element to an otherwise feminine look.
Try one with:
Wide-leg jeans + a cardigan
A blazer + trousers
A midi skirt + sneakers
A sweater + denim
Your favorite fall jacket
I especially love a classic neutral hat, but colored, embroidered and vintage-inspired hats are such a fun way to add personality. Sometimes the smallest accessory makes the biggest difference.

3. Flats & Loafers
I am officially in my loafer-and-flat era. While boots will always have a place in my fall wardrobe, I love having shoes that make an outfit feel polished without automatically making it feel overly “fall.” Ballet flats, loafers, Mary Janes and pointed-toe flats are all getting plenty of wear from me this October. And don't be afraid of color! Olive green, burgundy, red, cobalt and animal print are some of my favorite ways to make a simple outfit feel much more interesting.
Stylist tip: If your outfit feels like it needs something, try changing the shoe before changing the entire outfit. A statement flat can completely transform a basic jeans-and-top combination.

4. Anything Animal Print
Animal print is one of those trends that I don't think of as a trend anymore. At this point, leopard, snake, zebra and other animal prints are wardrobe staples. The key is to treat animal print like a neutral. A leopard belt can break up a simple jeans-and-sweater outfit. A snake-print skirt can become the statement piece of an otherwise simple look. An animal-print bag or shoe can instantly make a basic outfit feel styled. And if you're feeling brave? Mix your animal print with another print. My philosophy this season is less “How do I make this outfit match?” and more “How can I make this outfit interesting?”

5. Midi Pencil Skirts
One of my favorite ways to make fall dressing feel a little more elevated? The midi pencil skirt. There's something so effortlessly chic about the silhouette. It's polished enough for the office but can easily be dressed down for a weekend lunch, dinner or date night.
Try styling one with:
A fitted tee + belt + loafers
An oversized sweater + pointed flats
A button-down + statement jewelry
A cardigan + knee-high boots
A leather or suede jacket + simple top
And don't automatically think of a pencil skirt as a “dressy” piece. The styling is what determines the vibe. A casual tee and flat shoes can make the exact same skirt feel completely different from a blouse and heels.

6. Bermuda Shorts—Weather Permitting
Yes, I'm still wearing my Bermuda shorts in October when the weather allows it. Because here's the thing: just because the calendar says October doesn't mean you have to immediately pack away every piece of summer clothing. I love transitioning Bermuda shorts into early fall with loafers, ballet flats, lightweight sweaters, blouses, button-downs and jackets. The trick is to make the rest of the outfit feel seasonal.
Think: Bermuda shorts + loafers + blouse + suede jacket
Or: Bermuda shorts + fitted tee + cardigan + belt
When the temperature drops, I'll happily trade them for denim—but until then, I'm getting every last wear out of them.

7. Statement Accessories
If you take one thing away from this post, let it be this: Accessories are not an afterthought. This fall, I'm especially loving fun belts, statement jewelry, interesting handbags, oversized sunglasses, scarves and anything that gives a simple outfit a little personality. One of my favorite styling formulas is: Simple outfit + statement accessory = instantly more interesting.
Think: white tee + jeans + oversized sunglasses + great belt.
Or: black sweater + midi skirt + statement earrings + colorful bag.
Or: wide-leg denim + simple knit + bold necklace + fun flats.
You don't need an entirely new wardrobe to make your clothes feel new. Sometimes you just need to accessorize differently.

8. Sweaters & Cardigans With a Pop of Color
Fall doesn't have to mean living exclusively in beige, black, brown and cream. In fact, I'm making a strong case for color this season. Burgundy, olive, butter yellow, powder blue, cobalt, plum, red and rich greens are some of my favorite ways to make fall outfits feel fresh. A colorful cardigan is one of the easiest pieces to add to your wardrobe because you can wear it so many ways—buttoned as a top, layered over a tee, draped over your shoulders or worn open over a dress. My favorite rule for fall color? Don't be afraid to wear it with other color.
Burgundy + powder blue.
Olive + plum.
Blue + brown.
Butter yellow + gray.
Color doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to be intentional.

9. A Unique Jacket
Every fall wardrobe needs a jacket that does a little more than just keep you warm. I'm talking suede, cropped, bomber, fringe, leather, denim, embellished, patterned or unexpectedly colorful. Something that makes you look in the mirror and think, Okay, this outfit is cute. A great jacket is also one of my favorite styling shortcuts. Start with the easiest outfit in your closet—jeans and a tee—and throw on a really good jacket. Suddenly, you look like you put in much more effort than you actually did. And that's exactly what I want from my fall wardrobe.

10. The Perfect Tee
Last but certainly not least: the humble tee. Yes, even in October. A great white tee is one of the hardest-working pieces in my closet, but I'm also loving graphic tees and more unique printed versions this season.
Wear one underneath:
A cardigan
A blazer
A suede jacket
A leather jacket
A button-down
A statement coat
Or tuck it into wide-leg jeans with a great belt and flats for an outfit that takes approximately five minutes to put together. The secret to making a basic tee feel elevated is everything you put around it. Good denim + great shoes + intentional accessories + a third piece = effortless outfit. Never underestimate the power of a really good basic.

So, What's Actually in My October Closet?
If I had to narrow my fall wardrobe down to the pieces I'm reaching for most right now, these would be it:
Wide-leg jeans
Baseball hats
Flats & loafers
Animal print
Midi pencil skirts
Bermuda shorts
Statement accessories
Colorful sweaters & cardigans
Unique jackets
Great tees
And notice something? None of these pieces require you to completely reinvent your wardrobe. That's intentional. As a stylist, I'm much more interested in helping you shop smarter, style what you already own and create outfits that actually feel like you than convincing you that you need 30 new pieces every season. Start with what you already have. Add a new shoe. Try a different color combination. Throw on a belt. Mix in an unexpected print. Change your proportions. Layer something differently. Sometimes a wardrobe doesn't need more clothes. It just needs a little more styling.
Your October Style Challenge
Before you buy anything new this week, choose three pieces already sitting in your closet and style each one in a way you've never worn it before. Change the shoes. Add a statement accessory. Mix in a print. Play with color. Layer something unexpectedly. Take a picture of your favorite look and tag me—I want to see what you come up with! And, of course, I've linked all of my current October favorites below so you can shop the pieces I'm actually wearing and loving right now.
Happy styling,
Caroline Vonier
