Fall Fashion Mistakes I See All the Time — And What to Do Instead

Fall is one of the easiest seasons to get dressed for — but it’s also one of the easiest seasons to over-shop for. Everywhere you look, there are new sweaters, boots, jackets, bags, colors, prints and trends telling you what you need for the season. And before you know it, you’ve bought five new pieces… and you're still standing in front of your closet thinking, “I have nothing to wear.”

As a stylist, I think the problem is usually less about the amount of clothes in your closet and more about how you're styling them. A great fall wardrobe isn't about owning every trend. It's about understanding what works for you, what works together, and how to make your existing pieces feel fresh. Here are some of the most common fall fashion mistakes I see — and what to do instead.

1. Buying Trends Without Considering Your Wardrobe

Just because something is trending doesn't mean it belongs in your closet. Maybe animal print is everywhere. Maybe burgundy is the color of the season. Maybe suede jackets, statement belts or oversized silhouettes are having a major moment. That doesn't automatically mean you need all of them.

Do this instead:

Before buying a trend, ask yourself: “What do I already own that I could wear this with?”

If you can immediately think of three outfits, that's a good sign. If you can't think of anything in your closet that works with it, you might be buying the trend rather than building your wardrobe. Style should work with your closet — not constantly require a new closet.

2. Wearing the Same Silhouette Every Time

We all have our comfort zone. Maybe you always wear skinny jeans with a fitted sweater. Or wide-leg pants with a fitted top. Or leggings with an oversized sweatshirt. There's nothing wrong with having a signature silhouette, but wearing the exact same proportions every time can make your wardrobe feel repetitive — even when you own plenty of clothes.

Do this instead:

Start experimenting with proportions.

Try:

  • Oversized sweater + slim bottoms

  • Fitted top + wide-leg jeans

  • Cropped jacket + maxi skirt

  • Oversized button-down + fitted pants

  • Long coat + shorter skirt

  • Voluminous skirt + fitted sweater

You don't have to completely change your style. Just change the shape of the outfit. Sometimes that's all it takes to make an old piece feel completely new.

3. Ignoring Proportions

This goes hand-in-hand with silhouettes. You can have beautiful individual pieces that don't necessarily look right together because the proportions are competing. For example, an oversized sweater with a very full maxi skirt can sometimes overwhelm your frame. That doesn't mean either piece is wrong. It might simply need a little styling adjustment.

Do this instead:

Think about balance. If one part of your outfit is oversized, consider making another part more streamlined.

Try:

Oversized sweater + straight-leg jeans

Wide-leg trousers + fitted top

Long skirt + cropped jacket

Oversized blazer + fitted base layer

Voluminous dress + structured bag

And remember: proportions don't mean everything needs to be tight or fitted. The goal is simply to make the shape of the outfit feel intentional.

4. Forgetting Accessories

This is one of the easiest mistakes to fix. You can put on the perfect jeans, sweater and boots and still feel like something is missing. Usually, that something is the finishing touch. A belt. A great bag. Statement earrings. A scarf. A watch. A brooch. A fun pair of shoes.

Do this instead:

Before you leave the house, ask: “What is the finishing piece?”

Even adding one intentional accessory can completely change an outfit. Try a statement belt with jeans and a sweater. Add oversized earrings to a simple button-down. Carry a structured bag with a casual outfit. Add a colorful scarf to a neutral coat. Sometimes the outfit doesn't need another clothing item. It just needs styling.

5. Buying Something Just Because It's “In”

This is different from enjoying trends. I actually love trends. Trends introduce new colors, silhouettes, textures and ideas that can make getting dressed exciting again. The mistake is buying something simply because you saw it everywhere.

Do this instead:

Ask yourself: Do I actually like this, or do I like seeing it on other people?

That distinction matters. A trend should still feel like you. Maybe you don't need the full trend. Maybe you just want a small version of it. Love animal print? Try a belt or ballet flats. Love burgundy? Try a sweater or handbag. Love statement jewelry? Start with earrings. Love suede? Try a jacket or bag. You can participate in a trend without completely changing your personal style.

6. Not Considering Fabric

Fall fashion is about more than color. Texture matters. A sweater can be burgundy, but a soft knit, chunky wool, cashmere-style fabric and textured cardigan will all create completely different outfits. The same goes for denim, suede, leather, velvet, satin, corduroy and cotton.

Do this instead:

Think about mixing textures.

Try:

Suede + denim

Knit + satin

Leather + cotton

Wool + silk

Corduroy + soft knit

Denim + suede

This is one of my favorite ways to make an outfit feel more elevated without adding more color or accessories. If your outfit feels flat, you may not need another piece. You may just need another texture.

7. Having Plenty of Clothes but No Outfit Formulas

This might be the biggest one. You can have a closet full of beautiful clothes and still feel like you have nothing to wear if you don't know how to put them together. That's why I love outfit formulas. An outfit formula isn't a uniform. It's simply a combination that you know works.

Try these fall formulas:

Jeans + sweater + belt + flats

Maxi skirt + fitted sweater + tall boots

Button-down + jeans + suede jacket + statement jewelry

Wide-leg pants + fitted top + structured jacket

Mini skirt + tights + oversized sweater + tall boots

Dress + suede jacket + boots + statement bag

Once you find a few formulas that work for you, getting dressed becomes much easier. And then you can swap the individual pieces while keeping the formula.

8. Thinking You Need Something New When You Actually Need to Re-Style Something

This is probably my favorite styling reminder. Sometimes you don't need a new outfit. You need a new way to wear the outfit. Take a sweater you wore constantly last fall. Instead of wearing it the same way again, try:

  • Tucking it into a maxi skirt

  • Layering it over a button-down

  • Adding a statement belt

  • Pairing it with different denim

  • Adding tall boots instead of sneakers

  • Styling it with a colorful bag

  • Adding statement jewelry

  • Wearing it over a collared shirt

Same sweater. Completely different feeling. Before you buy something new, shop your own closet first.

Your Fall Styling Checklist

The next time you get dressed, ask yourself:

✓ Does this outfit have balanced proportions?

✓ Am I mixing textures?

✓ Is there a focal point?

✓ Could an accessory make this feel more intentional?

✓ Am I wearing this trend because I love it or because it's popular?

✓ Can I style something I already own differently?

✓ Do I have a simple outfit formula I can fall back on?

These little questions can completely change the way you approach your wardrobe.

The Real Goal of Fall Style

The goal isn't to have the trendiest closet. It isn't to buy everything that shows up on your Instagram feed. And it definitely isn't to replace your wardrobe every season. The goal is to understand your clothes well enough that getting dressed feels easy. Trends should inspire you. Accessories should add personality. Textures should create interest. Proportions should create balance. And the clothes in your closet should give you options — not overwhelm you.

So this fall, before you start filling your cart with new sweaters and boots, spend a little time styling what you already own. Change the proportions. Add a belt. Try a different shoe. Layer something unexpectedly. Mix textures. Play with color. Add the earrings you usually save for later. Because sometimes the best new outfit in your closet… isn't new at all.
