Fall, But Make It Handmade: 6 DIY Crafts to Make This Season

A little creativity, a little sparkle, and a lot more personality for your wardrobe, home, and everyday life. There’s something about fall that makes me want to make things. Maybe it’s the cooler evenings, the excuse to stay home with a coffee, the return of routines, or simply the fact that fall has a way of making everything feel a little more cozy and creative. And this year, I’m leaning into it.

Not just pumpkin candles and fall decor — although I absolutely love those too. I’m talking about actually making things.

Painting your jeans. Bedazzling your journal. Adding feathers to a lampshade. Taking a pottery class and making a coffee mug you’ll actually use. Putting fringe on a handbag. Adding lace to an old pair of jeans. Basically, if it can be customized, embellished, painted, decorated, or given a little personality... I want to do it. And honestly, I think DIY is having a little fashion moment of its own.

We spend so much time thinking about what we should buy next, but there is something incredibly satisfying about taking something you already own and turning it into something that feels completely personal. So this fall, instead of only shopping for new things, I'm challenging you to make something new out of something you already have. Here are six DIY projects I’m putting on my fall list.

01. Bedazzle Everything

Because apparently, nothing is safe from rhinestones. Let's start with my favorite category: Making ordinary things unnecessarily fabulous. I love a good rhinestone. And the best part about bedazzling is that you don't need to be particularly crafty to do it. You just need an object, some adhesive or appropriate embellishment tools, and an idea.

What to bedazzle:

Journals, Phone cases, Picture frames, Mirrors, Jewelry boxes, Makeup bags, Hairbrushes, Water bottles, Glasses cases, Candle holders, Small trays, Pens and pencils, Desk accessories A plain journal suddenly feels like a custom fashion-editorial notebook. A basic picture frame becomes a statement piece. A simple phone case becomes something that looks like it belongs in a boutique.

My favorite approach?

Don't feel like everything has to be completely covered. Sometimes a little sparkle is better. Try adding initials. A tiny bow. A heart. A star. A flower. Your favorite word. Or even a simple border of rhinestones around the edge. And if maximalism is your thing? Go all the way. Cover it. Add pearls. Add rhinestones. Add bows. Add charms. Make it ridiculous. The whole point is that it doesn't look like everyone else's.

Fall idea:

Make yourself a sparkly journal specifically for the season. Use a brown, burgundy, cream, or chocolate-colored notebook and add rhinestone initials, a little bow, or a fun phrase across the front. Then actually use it. Write down outfit ideas, recipes, things you're loving, places you want to go, or your fall bucket list.

02. Paint Your Denim

Your old jeans just got a personality upgrade. This might be one of the easiest ways to make your wardrobe feel completely different without buying anything. Find a pair of jeans, a denim jacket, a denim shirt, or even a denim skirt that feels a little too basic. Then paint it. You can keep it simple or get incredibly creative.

Try painting:

Cute sayings, Initials, Florals, Hearts, Stars, Bows, Butterflies, Fruit, Checkerboard patterns, Tiny flowers scattered across the denim, A large graphic on the back of a jacket, Your favorite phrase. And don't feel like it needs to look professionally manufactured. That's what makes it cool. A slightly imperfect hand-painted detail is what makes the piece feel like yours.

A few phrase ideas:

“Good Things Ahead”

“More Is More”

“Romanticize Everything”

“Lucky Girl”

“Meet Me for Coffee”

“Stay Curious”

“A Little Bit Extra”

“Très Chic”

Or make it completely personal. Your initials. A meaningful date. An inside joke. A phrase you always say. Something that makes you smile.

Want to make it more fashion-forward?

Instead of painting one giant graphic, try small motifs placed intentionally around the garment. Tiny burgundy flowers along a pocket. White bows down the side of a jean leg. Little stars scattered across a denim jacket. A colorful motif on the back pocket. You could even coordinate the colors with the rest of your fall wardrobe. Think burgundy, olive, butter yellow, powder blue, chocolate brown, cream, and soft pink. Now your DIY project is also part of your seasonal wardrobe.

03. Add Fringe & Feathers to Your Home

Because your home deserves a little drama too. This might be my favorite way to bring the current love of texture and embellishment into your home. Fringe and feathers don't have to mean your house suddenly looks like a costume shop. Used intentionally, they can make something ordinary feel collected, playful, and a little unexpected. And you don't need to replace your entire decor. Just choose one piece.

Try adding fringe or feathers to:

Lampshades, Picture frames, Cake stands, Decorative trays, Pillows, Curtains, Baskets, Table runners, Vases, Mirrors, Decorative boxes. Imagine a simple vintage-inspired picture frame with a tiny feather trim. Or a basic lampshade with fringe along the bottom. Or a cake stand with a decorative trim around the base. Or a simple pillow with a little fringe detail. Suddenly, the piece has personality.

My rule for this one:

Pick one area to embellish rather than everything in the room. If you have a dramatic fringed lampshade, let that be the moment. If you're adding feathers to a picture frame, keep the surrounding pieces simpler. The goal is for someone to walk into the room and think: “Wait... that's so cute. Where did you get that?” And you get to say: “I made it.”

04. Take a Pottery Class

Make something you’ll actually keep. This one requires leaving the house — which makes it perfect for a fall girls' night, date night, or solo creative afternoon. Take a pottery class. There is something so fun about making an object with your hands and then actually getting to use it afterward. And you don't need to make a perfect vase. In fact, I think the imperfect pieces are often the most charming.

Make:

A coffee mug, A little jewelry dish, A candle holder, A small vase, A spoon rest, A ring dish, A little dessert plate, A tea cup, A catch-all dish for your nightstand. Personally, I love the idea of making a coffee mug. Imagine sitting down on a chilly fall morning, making your coffee, and drinking it out of a mug that you literally made yourself. It doesn't have to be perfect. Maybe it's slightly lopsided. Maybe the glaze isn't exactly what you pictured. Maybe that's what makes it special.

Make it personal.

Paint your initials. Add a tiny flower. Choose your favorite color. Write a word or phrase inside. Or make a little collection of mismatched pieces that all feel like they belong together. And if you go with friends? Make it an entire afternoon.

Pottery class → coffee → lunch → shopping → home. That's a fall day I can get behind.

05. Give Your Clothes & Accessories a Fringe, Feather, or Lace Moment

Your closet might have more potential than you think. This is where DIY meets personal style. Instead of getting rid of a piece because it feels boring, ask: What would make me actually want to wear this? Maybe the answer is fringe. Maybe it's feathers. Maybe it's lace. Maybe it's all three.

Try adding fringe to:

Jeans, Denim jackets, Skirts, Handbags, Scarves, Cardigans, Jackets, Boots

Try feathers on:

Blouse sleeves, Jacket cuffs, Dress hems, Skirt details, Bags, Shoes

And lace can go almost anywhere:

Along the hem of jeans, On a denim jacket, Around a blouse cuff, On a handbag, Around the edge of a skirt, Peeking out from underneath a sweater, As a decorative panel on denim. One of my favorite ideas is taking an older pair of jeans and adding lace or fringe along the hem. Suddenly, the jeans feel completely different. You can also add a little fringe to a basic handbag. Or add feather trim to the sleeves of a simple blouse. Or put lace along the edge of a denim jacket. The goal isn't necessarily to make something look homemade. It's to make it look intentional and one-of-a-kind.

06. Make a Fall DIY “Fashion Find” From Something You Already Own

The challenge: don't buy anything. This one is less of a specific craft and more of a challenge. Open your closet. Find something you haven't worn in at least six months. Then ask yourself: “What would make me excited to wear this again?” Maybe it's paint. Maybe it's a new button. Maybe it's fringe. Maybe it's lace. Maybe it's a brooch. Maybe it's a belt. Maybe it's simply styling it in a completely different way. Take an old blazer. Add a brooch. Take an oversized button-down. Wear it open over a fitted dress. Take an old pair of jeans. Paint the pocket. Take a basic bag. Add a scarf or charm. Take a plain sweater. Layer a lace blouse underneath. This is one of the biggest things I want to encourage this fall: Don't automatically shop for the solution. Sometimes you can create it.

A Little DIY Inspiration Board

If you're not sure where to start, here's your fall creative mood board:

Sparkle: rhinestones, pearls, sequins

Texture: feathers, fringe, faux fur

Color: burgundy, olive, plum, butter yellow, powder blue, chocolate brown

Details: bows, florals, lace, embroidery

Prints: leopard, zebra, plaid, stripes

Materials: denim, suede, velvet, leather, ceramic

Basically... Fall, but make it handmade.

The Best Part About DIY? It Doesn't Have to Be Perfect.

I think this is worth saying because sometimes "DIY" immediately makes people think: I am not crafty. Mine won't look like Pinterest. I don't know how to do that. Good. It doesn't have to. The point isn't to create something that looks factory-made. The point is to create something that couldn't have come from a factory. A slightly crooked ceramic mug. A hand-painted flower on your jeans. A rhinestone-covered notebook. A little fringe on a lampshade. A piece of lace sewn onto an old jacket. Those imperfections are part of the charm. And honestly, there's something really satisfying about owning something that has a story attached to it.

Your Fall DIY Challenge

So here's my challenge for you: Make one thing this fall. Not buy. Not order. Not add to your cart. Make. Take an old piece of clothing and give it a second life. Decorate something you already own. Try a pottery class. Bedazzle something completely unnecessary. Paint your jeans. Add fringe to a bag. Make a coffee mug. Whatever sounds fun to you. Because I think we're allowed to make fashion and home decor feel a little more playful again. We don't always need to be searching for the next thing to buy.

Sometimes we can slow down, get creative, and make something that's completely our own. And if it ends up covered in rhinestones Even better. This fall, I'm choosing creativity over perfection, personality over predictability, and a little DIY magic wherever I can find it. Now go make something cute.
