Confessions of a Semi-Shopaholic

An honest love letter to shopping, a full closet, and the eternal question: “But where would I wear it?” Let's get one thing straight: I love fashion. I love discovering a brand I've never heard of, finding the perfect pair of shoes, stumbling upon a designer-looking bag for less, and convincing myself that a new jacket is, in fact, a wardrobe essential. And don't even get me started on fall fashion.

The suede. The boots. The coats. The bags. The layering possibilities. Suddenly, every online shopping tab feels like a very important research project. So yes, I might be a semi-shopaholic. The keyword being semi. We're keeping things cute here. But somewhere between adding things to my cart, saving outfit inspiration on Pinterest, and convincing myself that I need just one more pair of ballet flats, I've learned a few things about shopping, personal style, and the difference between loving clothes and constantly wanting more of them. Consider this my little confession.

Confession No. 1: I Have Absolutely Bought Something Because of the Outfit I Imagined Wearing It With

You know the feeling. You see a beautiful top, a pair of shoes, or a bag, and immediately envision an entire life around it. Suddenly, you're not buying a blouse. You're buying the blouse you'll wear to a fall dinner, a weekend getaway, a holiday party, and approximately six imaginary occasions that have yet to make it onto your calendar. The outfit is perfect. The vision is there. The possibilities are endless. And then the package arrives, you open your closet, and realize you have absolutely no idea what to wear it with. Been there.

This is one of the biggest lessons I've learned about shopping: loving a piece and knowing how to style a piece are two very different things. Now, before I buy something, I try to picture at least three outfits I could create with it using things I already own. If I can't imagine it working with my actual wardrobe, I take that as a sign to pause. Because the goal isn't to own beautiful clothes. It's to actually wear them.

Confession No. 2: I Will Always Have a Soft Spot for a Good Deal

Tell me something is on sale, and suddenly I'm interested. Tell me it's a designer-inspired find for a fraction of the price, and now you have my attention. I love a good affordable find as much as the next girl. Finding a piece that looks expensive without the expensive price tag? One of life's little joys. But I've also realized that a bargain isn't really a bargain if you never wear it. We've all been tempted by the clearance section, the limited-time discount, or the “only a few left” notification. Sometimes the thrill of getting a deal becomes more exciting than the actual item.

My new rule? I ask myself whether I'd want the piece if it were full price. If the answer is no, the discount probably isn't the reason I should buy it. I'm all for shopping smart. I'm just not interested in filling my closet with things I bought solely because they were marked down.

Confession No. 3: My Closet Is Full, Yet Sometimes I Still Have Nothing to Wear

The most ironic part of loving fashion is standing in front of a closet full of clothes and feeling completely uninspired. How can there be so many options and somehow nothing that feels right? Sometimes it's because our wardrobes are full of individual pieces we love, but we haven't figured out how to make them work together. Sometimes we're buying for the person we think we should dress like instead of the person we actually are. And sometimes we simply get into a routine. Same jeans. Same sweater. Same shoes. Repeat.

Here's what I've come to believe: a full closet doesn't automatically equal a functional wardrobe. This is one of the reasons I love personal styling. You don't always need to start over or buy a whole new collection of clothes. Sometimes you need a fresh perspective on the things you already own. Try the skirt with the oversized sweater. Switch the sneakers for loafers. Add the belt. Pull out the bag you save for special occasions. You might be surprised by how many new outfits are already hanging in your closet.

Confession No. 4: I Am Easily Influenced by a Really Good Outfit

A perfectly styled street-style photo? Saved. A creator wearing the most incredible color combination? Screenshot. A girl on Pinterest pairing something unexpected with an oversized blazer? Immediately added to the inspiration board. I love seeing how other people get dressed. It's one of my favorite ways to discover new ideas, brands, and styling tricks. But there's a difference between being inspired by someone's style and feeling like you need to recreate their entire wardrobe. Just because a trend looks amazing on someone else doesn't mean it's right for you. And just because everyone seems to be wearing something doesn't mean it needs to find its way into your closet.

I've started treating fashion inspiration as just that: inspiration. Maybe I love the silhouette but not the color. Maybe I want to recreate the vibe with pieces I already own. Maybe I love the outfit on someone else, and that's enough. You can appreciate a trend without purchasing your way into it. The best personal style takes inspiration from everywhere but still feels like you.

Confession No. 5: Accessories Are My Weakness

If you've ever heard me talk about the power of a good bag, you already know where I stand on this one. A simple outfit with an interesting bag, a great shoe, a fun belt, or the right earrings can feel completely different. Give me a beautiful burgundy suede bag, an animal-print flat, or a statement accessory that makes an otherwise simple outfit interesting, and I'm listening. But this is also where I remind myself that accessories should work with my wardrobe, not become a separate collection of things I admire but rarely use.

Before buying another bag, I try to think about the outfits I'd wear it with. Does it bring something new to my wardrobe? Will I reach for it regularly? Does it work with the colors and pieces I already love? Sometimes the answer is absolutely yes. And sometimes the burgundy bag can wait until tomorrow. Probably.

Confession No. 6: I Don't Actually Want More Clothes. I Want More Outfits.

This might be the biggest realization of all. What I love most about fashion isn't necessarily the act of buying something new. It's the creativity of getting dressed. It's taking a piece I've owned for years and styling it in a way that feels completely fresh. It's finding an unexpected color combination that somehow works. It's putting together an outfit that makes me feel confident before I've even left the house. Shopping can be fun, but styling is where the magic happens.

And when I think about the wardrobe I really want, it's not necessarily the biggest one. It's the one where I can open my closet and see possibilities. The pieces work together. I know what I feel good in. I can get dressed without feeling overwhelmed. And when I do buy something new, it has a purpose. That's the sweet spot for me: enjoying fashion without feeling like I constantly need to chase the next thing.

My Semi-Shopaholic Shopping Rules

I'm certainly not here to tell anyone to stop shopping. Fashion should be fun! I love discovering new pieces, sharing affordable finds, and investing in things that make getting dressed more exciting. But I've found that a few little habits can make shopping feel more intentional.

My unofficial rules:

  • The three-outfit test: Can I style this at least three different ways with pieces I already own?

  • The closet check: Do I already own something similar that I rarely wear?

  • The lifestyle check: Does this fit the life I actually live, not just the imaginary one in my Pinterest boards?

  • The quality check: Does the fit, fabric, and construction justify the price?

  • The pause: Am I buying this because I genuinely love it, or because it's on sale, trending, or everywhere on social media?

  • The wear-it-now rule: If I buy it, I make an effort to wear it instead of saving it indefinitely for the perfect occasion.

None of these rules are about being perfect. They're simply little reminders to shop in a way that makes my wardrobe work harder for me.

So, Am I Still a Semi-Shopaholic?

Oh, absolutely. I'll probably always get excited about a new collection, spend too much time browsing fall accessories, and have a running wishlist of pieces I absolutely do not need but would love to own. And I don't think there's anything wrong with loving fashion. I just want to be the person who knows how to style the clothes she buys. The person who wears the good shoes on an ordinary Tuesday. The person who can make five different outfits from the same favorite pair of jeans. Because personal style isn't about having everything. It's about knowing what works for you, wearing it with confidence, and having a little fun along the way.

So here's to shopping the sales, saving the inspiration photos, occasionally falling in love with a bag, and learning when to close the browser tab. We're a work in progress. And if all else fails, at least we'll look cute.

With love (and probably a few things still sitting in my cart),

Let's talk about it

Are you a fellow semi-shopaholic, or are you the disciplined girl who buys one thing and wears it for the next ten years? Tell me your biggest shopping weakness. Is it shoes, bags, coats, sale finds, or something you absolutely did not need but somehow convinced yourself was essential? I want to know.

And remember: before you add to cart, try shopping your own closet first.

♡ Caroline

P.S. If your closet is full but getting dressed still feels impossible, that's exactly what I help with through my personalized closet edits and styling services. Sometimes you don't need more clothes. You just need a new way to see the ones you have.
